Some may have been surprised that Parsons The New School of Design would hire the controversial designer John Galliano to teach a class, a group on Change.org is taking a stand and protesting his new position. A petition has been posted online protesting John Galliano’s new place at the designer school.

The online petition starts by saying “This is a person who was fired from Dior for his anti-Semitic remarks, who Natalie Portman refused to work with because of his remarks, so why is Parsons The New School for Design hiring him?”

After describing the charges that faced Galliano in previous years the petition says “It is disgraceful to hire someone who has made such inhumane comments. We do not want money from our tuition going to this kind of person. We feel like we’ve been slapped in the face by our school. There should be no room for this kind of person as a staff member on the faculty at Parsons.”
The petition is anonymous, so it is impossible to tell if it is Parsons students themselves protesting the class or outsiders. At the time of print the petition had 251 signatures.

Despite all of the controversy Parsons will not comment on the petition. Students and media seem split on the idea of attending the class, because while they may not condone his actions in his personal life, there is no denying his talent as a fashion designer.
